Music Television?

MTV has updated it's logo in order to showcase it's recently popular reality TV shows. This is the first change to the logo is almost 30 years. The move, which dropped the "music television" subline and slightly changed the dimensions to the iconic logo is seemingly minor but more symbolic than anything. Over the next few weeks MTV will roll out new images of the logo imposed over pictures of it's stars, rather than involving the musicians of the past.
Over the past decade or so MTV has garnered criticism for the large decrease in actual music it plays and also for the radical and sometimes risky reality and scripted television shows it broadcasts. The recent attention to shows like "Jersey Shore" and "Teen Mom" have drawn a huge increase in viewership, but has cost some revenue from sponsors. The channel has had issues with brand recognition in recent years, and the move to change the logo brings hope that it will become a simple reference point for viewers.
I honestly don't think this will work very well. MTV as a name is synonymous with music, but has quickly been losing steam over the last 5-10 years and is no longer musically relevant. In my opinion if they're going to focus on a completely different subject matter and put a priority to reality shows they should completely recreate their image and the logo.

  1. There should be a healthy balance between music and reality television on MTV. That way, MTV could cater to both crowds. I know that many of my friends have complained that they don't enjoy watching MTV anymore because it has NOTHING to do with music. Its as if I were watching an on going NBC sitcom marathon or SNL.
MTV should live up to their name. There is nothing wrong with changing with the times by adding reality television. But please, stick to the name you gave yourself.

  2. Finally! MTV has not showed music in so long! I can't remember the last time I even saw a music video on there unless it was 4 in the morning! I think it is a great move for them because they really are not music television and they really should move forward from that. I know they can't change their name because it is already associated with it but taking out the meaning can maybe help it adapt to changing times.

  3. i used to watch MTV all the because of the music, now i never watch it because of the trashy reality shows. jersey shore and real world are just another way for people to have their 15 minutes of fame. i think this is a horrible descision on their part, im interrested to see how this will work for them.

  4. I feel like MTV should play more music videos sinces thats what the whole purpose of the network is about not all of the reality shows which seem 100% staged most of the time.

  5. Now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I saw a music video on MTV. I suppose it is appropiate for them to change their logo.I think it was all about the ratings. Right now reality tv shows have hit high for all ratings. Either way it really won't make a difference to me.

  6. I think they should leave it as is. I watch both of those shows and I think there pretty good. If the big deal is to change the MTV logo to make more money, I think that is a bad idea. So yeah I think they should leave it as is.

  7. I watched MTV sparingly growing up, but for some reason it does not interest me whatsoever nowadays. Especially with all those reality shows. Hate reality shows! It sounds like MTV is not neccessarily changing for the better even though I am sure they are trying to. Lets see how these new changes work out.

  8. MTV has been around a long time. Change is always good as long as the change is not too drastic.

I love Teen Mom and Jersey Shore so much that I watch their reruns.

MTV will be around for years to come.
